In 2025, are solar water heaters worth it, despite the initial cost?
-
Now is a wonderful time to make smart, future-friendly choices for your family.
Have you ever considered switching to solar energy but felt surprised by the upfront costs? Or maybe you’ve never heard of a solar water heater before.
This blog will address common myths surrounding eco-friendly heating options and explain how a solar water heater works, sharing the benefits and potential challenges. That way, you can decide what works best for you.

Did you know that for an average household in the UK, hot water makes up about 25% of the energy bill? If saving money, reducing your carbon footprint, and using cleaner energy sounds appealing, then considering a switch to solar water heating might be a great choice.

- Solar Water Heaters Energy explained
What is solar energy? How does a solar heater work?
Feel free to skip past the technical bits, but if you’re interested in the mechanisms behind this sustainable device, read on!
Utilising the sun’s huge amount of energy emitted, which is converted into heat or electricity into renewable energy.
You might be familiar with solar panels that produce electricity, but did you know that solar water heaters are used specifically to warm water?
In simple terms, the sun’s rays are absorbed by collectors—which can be either evacuated tubes or flat panels—and used to heat a special fluid. This fluid then heats your water. As the water heats up, it rises, while cooler water sinks, creating a natural circulation called a thermosyphon system (which our solar water heaters are based on). This clever design means no mechanical pump is needed, making it a simpler and low-maintenance option.
Collectors are of 2 types: Flat panels or Evacuated tubes…
While flat panels tend to be more affordable, evacuated tubes have a larger surface area to catch more sunlight throughout the day, especially on cloudy days—which is great for UK weather! Plus, their cylindrical shape makes it easier to install at just the right angle.
Since energy from the sun varies across the year, most solar water heating systems work alongside a boiler or immersion heater to ensure you always have hot water, even in winter.
Is it all sunshine and rainbows? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
During summer, a solar water heater can supply up to 80-90% of your hot water needs—meaning your boiler can stay off most of the time, according to the Energy Saving Trust (EST). That’s good news for your wallet, your energy independence, and the environment.
These systems can last between 10 to 25 years, depending on how well they’re maintained and their initial quality.
Since the UK isn’t sunny all year round, during winter months, a solar water heater might provide around 15% of your hot water, according to the Energy Saving Trust (EST). So, you’ll still want to use your boiler or an immersion heater to keep things running smoothly.
It’s important to have enough space on your roof and a sunny spot—remember, the more exposure to the sun, the more hot water you’ll generate.
Regular cleaning can prevent issues like scaling, and proper installation helps avoid leaks or corrosion.
Although the upfront costs can seem high, the long-term savings make it a smart investment.
