What actually is steel?

Let us break it down to the basics. Steel is an alloy (a metal created by combining 2 or more metals) made from iron and carbon. This differs from stainless steel, whereby various metals (chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen) are added in addition to steel. The main difference between them is that stainless steel is corrosion and rust-resistant, whereas steel (also known as carbon or mild steel) is not.

So what makes stainless steel corrosion and rust-resistant?

Well, the incorporated chromium reacts with the oxygen in the air, forming a passive layer of chromium oxide protecting the steel. To be classed as stainless steel, a minimum quantity of 10.5% Chromium must be added; it’s important to note that the greater the quantity of Chromium added, the more rust and corrosion-resistant the steel becomes. In all of Zack’s products, 18/10 stainless steel is used, meaning it consists of 18% chromium and 10% nickel and therefore resulting in greater rust resistance.

Stainless steel and recycling

Stainless steel is recyclable and has a long life cycle! When making stainless steel, 60% scrap is used to help produce it. It is more important now than ever to make environmentally conscious and sustainable decisions. 

The process begins by dividing the scrap into old (end-of-life scrap from remains of already-used product) and new (excess from production). Once the steel is shredded and analysed, it is organised relative to its metal type and subsequently melted in an electric arc furnace (EAF).

Finally, the steel is formed into slabs, plates, sheets or wire, ready to be reused for new products. For example, Zack toilet brush holders or Zack key cabinets.

How to prevent rusting

It’s not impossible for stainless steel to rust but measures can be taken to reduce the chances. Regular maintenance is advised for aftercare. Cleaning surfaces with warm water and soap using a damp cloth is essential. For heavier soiled items like grease or oil, use hot water and some washing-up liquid. Items should then be dried thoroughly afterwards. It is helpful to keep the products away from chlorine or saltwater environments.
